Q & A
Adult Child Support

Q: What can ParentFinancial do for me?
A: ParentFinancial is dedicated to collecting child support arrearages that are owed to the custodial parent. We are in the business of helping you get the money you are owed so that you can take care of your family.

Q: How much do your services cost? How do you get paid?
A: ParentFinancial charges a fee based upon the difficulty of the case. We look at each individual case, the arrearage balance involved, if the NCP is current, and other factors. In general, when there are arrearages of over one year, ParentFinancial collects 30% of the past due balance we are responsible for collecting. For monitoring cases that are one year or less in arrearages, the amount charged is 15% of each payment collected.

Q: Can you guarantee results?
A: We can guarantee that we will do our best on your behalf.

Q: How long do you collect the 30% fee?
A: We collect the 30% fee until there is no longer a past due balance of child support.

Q: Once I complete the enrollment process, how long will it take to start receiving money from the non-custodial parent?
A: As soon as we locate the non-custodial parent and file the necessary paperwork. If you are currently receiving child support, the process of increasing the garnishment to include arrearages typically takes approximately 2 months. If you are not receiving any support, it can take anywhere from 2-6 months. The more information you can provide, and the faster you can get it to us after completing the enrollment materials - the faster we can locate the non-custodial parent. Situations that make it more difficult to collect and take longer are when the non-custodial parent is self-employed, employed by family, changes jobs frequently, or is paid in cash.

Q: How do I receive money that you collect?
A: All of our clients receive a ParentFinancial Visa debit card. As payments are collected, we deposit money into your ParentFinancial account. The card may used anywhere Visa is accepted, and at virtually all ATM locations.

Q: How will I know when you have received a payment from the non-custodial parent?
A: You can use our website, ParentFinancial.com, to access your case status and payment history. And as always, our customer service representatives will be happy to help you with any questions you may have. Our toll free number is 1-800-313-PARENT.

Q: Do you offer any other services besides collections?
A: In addition to collection and monitoring services, we offer the ParentFinancial Visa debit card and our PowerClub discount program, which provides meaningful savings through coupons and discounts on groceries, medicines, and other essential services that you use every day.

Q: Does ParentFinancial share my private information with third parties?
A: Absolutely not. We strictly protect your information with the latest in procedures and software.

Q: What if I don't want to use ParentFinancial's services anymore?
A: You may notify ParentFinancial in writing within ten (10) days after you sign the Agreement of Your desire to end the Agreement or after all fees, advances, and sums due ParentFinancial are paid, you can terminate your contract in one of the following ways:

1) Without notice of cancellation, after the Specified Amount is collected in full and all fees and obligations to ParentFinancial are paid, ParentFinancial will continue to monitor and collect all child support payments due to You for 15% of the child support payments per month.

Q: What means do you use to collect?
A: We utilize liens, writs, and levys along with Motions to Enforce to collect child support. Writs of Garnishment to employers are our best way to collect child support and keep the non-custodial parent paying on a regular basis.

Q: Can I receive the non-custodial parent's IRS refund?
A: Yes. You must have had a case with the attorney general first. They are the only agency with state authorization to enroll eligible cases in the Federal Offset Program.

Q: My child is over 18, can you collect for me also?
A: Adult child support cases are special, but yes we can collect on those too.

Q: Can you seize the non-custodial parent's property?
A: No. But, we can place a general lien on any property that the non-custodial parent may own and any real property that does not have a homestead exemption. We also have the ability to freeze a bank account until we can come to an agreement about payment terms.

Q: What if the assets are in the new spouse's name?
A: If the property is in both the non-custodial parent's name and spouse's name, then we can place a lien on the property.

Q: Can I have the non-custodial parent put in jail for non-payment of child support?
A: A warrant for the non-custodial parent's arrest can be issued through a process called "Motion to Enforce". This process does take longer than any other method of collection and we have found that this is not as effective as other means.

Q: Can I get child support increased?
A: Yes. We have an attorney referral network that can help you with that process if your case is eligible, and your legal fees would be payable to the attorney on the case.

Q: Can I take away the non-custodial parent's visitation rights for non-payment of child support?
A: No. Visitation is determined by the court and can only be changed by the court. The non-custodial parent has a right to see the child(ren) whether or not he/she is paying child support. Issues regarding visitation should be referred to an attorney.
